There was pandemonium last weekend at the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, following the death of one of the students, Bashir Musa, during interrogation by the police in the state.
The police command, however, debunked the rumour, saying Bashir died in a hospital and not during interrogation.
“Investigation is on course on the death of one Bashir Musa, a student of the Federal University Dutse, FUD, who lost his life recently after a scuffle with five others over a girl friend, Aisha Sale, of Jigawa State Polytechnic Dutse,” the police stated.
According to reports, the deceased and four others, all students of FUD, engaged in a fight over their girl friend, Aisha Sale who is studying at Jigawa State Polytechnic, Dutse, weekend.
The source further revealed that after the fight, one of the boy friends of Aisha, Abdulnajib Ibrahim, went to Dutse Divisional Police Station and lodged a complaint over the beaten he received from Bashir and four others.
According to sources, when the report reached the police, the deceased was arrested and taken to the police station to write a statement where he later died as a result of alleged tourture by the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdul Jinjiri, confirmed the incident.
DSP Jinjiri explained that when the police received the complain from one Abdulmajib Ibrahim, they arrested Bashir Musa but discovered he was already injured which made them took him to the Police hospital where he later died as a result of injury he sustained during the fight.
Jinjiri said he was not taken to the police station let alone killed by the police during interrogation. His words: “So Absulmajib having been injured, rushed and reported the matter to the police that he was injured by Bashir Musa and his friends, and on returning, he still met them and fight broke out again for the second time where he was said to have hit Bashir Musa with a stick on his head in retaliation to the beaten he received earlier.”
According to the Police spokesman, investigation on the matter is being handled by the police. The details of the cause of death would be made known in due course.

Conman posed as US general to defraud British women of £300,000

A fraudster who posed as an American general serving in Afghanistan conned two women out of more than £300,000 in just six months in what detectives believe was a multi-million-pound global scam.

The conman used images of real-life US soldiers to befriend the women over Skype saying he wanted to move to the UK to marry them.

He posed as “General James Krulak” and “General James Raul” and persuaded them to help transfer his $8.5 million (£5.4 million) retirement fund — a “box of treasure” from a family in Afghanistan.

Today Scotland Yard issued an appeal, saying it has identified two other possible victims of the fraudster but fears there may be many more women who have lost money.

Detectives from the Yard’s new FALCON cyber crime unit say they have uncovered evidence the con was part of a “sophisticated global network” preying on vulnerable women.

Nigerian national Robinson Agbonifoayetan, 32, of Welling, is facing jail after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation at Isleworth crown court.

The court heard how the British victim, in her sixties and living in Ealing, was befriended by a man she believed to be a US general after he contacted her out of the blue on Skype.

The man insisted on speaking to her several times a day, paying her countless compliments and confiding in her about tragic family events, like his parents and sister dying in a car crash.
Within days he talked of marrying her and introduced the idea of a box containing $8.5million, which he said he had been given by a family after he saved their lives serving in Afghanistan.

She also agreed to meet an delivery agent at a rail station who produced a United Nations diplomatic ID card bearing the name Christopher Williams, saying he came from St Lucia — though the card bore the flag of Belgium. Police say this was actually Agbonifoayetan, who was also the fake US general on Skype.

The victim used up her life savings, pawned jewellery, sold her car and took out loans to pay the spiralling costs before finally becoming suspicious and going to the police.

Detectives arrested Agbonifoayetan at Heathrow airport on December 17 2014, as he tried to leave the country on a flight to Nigeria.

When police raided his family home in Welling they found a receipt book with details of a second victim in Devon. The woman, in her fifties, was sold a similar story by a “General James Raul” and handed over £22,000.

Detectives are now seeking a compensation order to help the victims recoup some of the cash, which was sent to Ghana and Nigeria.

Detective Constable Nick Curtis, who led the inquiry, said: “We are coming across a number of cases of romance fraud. I urge anyone who thinks they may have been a victim to report it to police now.”

PDP Officials Squandered N12bn i\In 9 months –Workers

Angry workers of the Peoples Democratic Party have accused the members of the National Working Committee of the party of squandering N12bn in nine months.
The workers claim that N11bn was realised from the sale of nomination forms while N1bn was gotten from the sale of delegates forms.

They alleged that the money was squandered shortly after the sale of the forms began on October 27, 2014 till date.
The workers said this in their response to the letter sent to them by the party’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, on Wednesday.

Oladipo, in the letter, informed workers about the decision of the NWC to reduce the party’s workforce by 50% and to also cut the salaries of those to be retained by the same percentage.

The national secretary of the party said the decision, among others, would take effect from August. He said:

“Establishment staff who would remain are required to obtain individual letters of revalidation from their state chapters within one month of this circular to their suitability for service at the national secretariat.”
However, after a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the workers sent a reply to Oladipo yesterday titled, “Re: Organisation and Restructuring of staff at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party.” They sent copies of the letter, which was exclusively obtained by Punch, to former President Goodluck Jonathan and the acting Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, Alhaji Haliru Bello.

Copies were also sent to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, PDP caucuses in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Chairman, PDP Governors’ Forum, Dr. Segun Mimiko and all the PDP governors.
Besides querying how the N11bn was spent, the workers also said they were aware that the party realised another N1bn in sales of delegates forms recently. With this, the angry workers wondered how the party that was in power could be in a financial crisis.

Their letter to Oladipo read in part,
“While we appreciate the fact that the party is no longer in power, we are equally aware that the party realised over eleven billion naira (N11,000,000,000) in income from the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms in the last quarter of 2014.
“We are equally aware that the NWC collected over a billion naira from the sale of delegate forms via a company account called Morufi Nig. Ltd, Zenith Bank Account N0:1014041654. “With this healthy bank balance, we find it strange that after just two months of handing over power, the NWC is proposing a 50% reduction in staff emoluments.”
“We have also observed from publications in the media that the NWC shared outrageous largesse among themselves immediately after the party’s loss in the last general elections. “We are appalled by the whimsical and derisory nature of the circular which unfortunately negates all known administrative procedures. We wish to recall that the national secretary, who is statutorily in charge of the administration of the secretariat, has never called for a staff meeting or held any interactive session with the staff since his privileged appointment.
“We wish to draw the national secretary’s attention to the fact that there are administrative procedures for the disengagement of staff whose appointments have been duly confirmed.”
The workers said they welcomed the decision of the NWC members to reduce their personal staff and also reduce their emoluments. But they said they rejected “the directives for staff members to get revalidation letters from the state chapters as this act will amount to accepting our unlawful disengagement from service.
“We reject in totality the proposal to reduce staff emolument by 50%. This is because unlike the members of the NWC, the staff are solely dependent on their salaries and allowances.”
They said they still have unwavering belief in the possibility of the party bouncing back, and, therefore, urged the NWC to have the same faith. The workers reminded the NWC members that the establishment staff of the PDP national secretariat were engaged on the basis of a well-articulated establishment manual that expressly stated the conditions of service therein.

Members of the National Association of Delta State Students, NADESSTU, have threatened to shut down the capital city of Asaba, if their 2013/2014 bursary was not paid in the next two weeks.

NADESSTU in a communiqué at the end of its emergency meeting at Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, said that the students were no longer happy with the development, adding that any further delay in the payment of the bursary may lead to students’ unrest in the state.

The communiqué by Shaka Emomine, National President and others, decried that the student community was losing faith in the national leadership of the association over the issue.

The communiqué, read:

“The national leadership of the association will no longer stand any chance of losing or jeopardizing the trust bestowed on us by our fellow students whom we were elected to serve and protect their interest.
“Therefore, the Delta State Government is hereby issued a two-week ultimatum to come up with the payment of the Delta State Students Bursary/Scholarships Award or risk a state wide protest from the students with its main target being the state capital, Asaba with a magnitude of protest capable of bringing all commercial activities in the beautiful city to a halt until the cries of the students are listened to.”
